Have you ever found yourself praying because you feel you should, rather than because you really feel like it?
I’ve been thinking about prayer lately and how, sometimes. something that should feel so natural can begin to feel a little like another item on our to-do list.
We know we should pray. We know how important it is to spend time with God. Sometimes, we even want to pray. And yet, there are days when we sit down, close our eyes and find ourselves struggling to find the words.
Sometimes our prayers feel full of life and conversation. Other times, if we’re honest, they can feel a little like we’re going through the motions.
Perhaps we pray because we feel we ought to, rather than because our hearts are really in it.
And I wonder whether sometimes, we put a little too much pressure on ourselves.
We think our prayers need to be meaningful, well thought out or beautifully worded. We worry that we’re not praying enough, or that we’re not doing it properly.
But God isn’t waiting for us to deliver a perfect speech!
He already knows our hearts. He knows when we’re tired, distracted, worried or simply don’t know what to say.
Sometimes prayer might be nothing more than a whispered ‘Help me, Lord.’
Sometimes it’s a thank you for something lovely that happened during the day.
Sometimes it’s sitting quietly, not really knowing what to say at all.
And perhaps that’s okay.
I think we need to remember that prayer isn’t another job to tick off our Christian to-do list. It’s an opportunity to spend time with someone who loves us more than we can possibly imagine.
So if prayer has been feeling a little like a duty lately, take the pressure off.
Talk to God as you are, not as you think you ought to be.
No fancy words, no perfect routine, no performance.
Just you and Him.
And maybe tomorrow, over that first cup of tea, start with a simple hello.
