When The Cheering Stops

When the cheering stopped

There was a time when the streets were loud with praise.

On Palm Sunday, the crowd gathered, waving branches, laying down cloaks, shouting for Jesus Christ as He entered the city. It was celebration. It was recognition. It was hope bursting into the open.

For a moment, everything felt right.

But the cheering didn’t last.

The Silence That Followed

It’s striking how quickly the atmosphere changed.

The same voices that once shouted in admiration grew quiet—or worse, turned hostile. The energy of celebration faded into whispers, confusion, and fear. By the time we reach Good Friday, the noise of praise had been replaced with the weight of suffering.

“When the cheering stopped” wasn’t just about a crowd losing interest.

It was about the moment when following became costly.

It’s easy to stand in the crowd when everything feels uplifting.

When faith is celebrated.

When hope is visible.

When the story looks like it’s heading toward victory.

But Holy Week reminds us of something deeper: what happens when the applause fades?

• When doing the right thing isolates you

• When your beliefs are questioned

• When the path you thought would be triumphant becomes uncertain

The silence can feel uncomfortable. Even frightening.

Many stepped back when things became difficult.

Some denied. Some doubted. Some disappeared.

Yet a few remained.

Figures like Mary Magdalene stayed present in the pain. Others, like Peter the Apostle, stumbled—but their story didn’t end there.

Holy Week doesn’t hide human weakness. It reveals it. And still, it invites us to stay.

To remain when it’s no longer popular.

To believe when it’s no longer easy.

The Space Between

There’s a quiet tension between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

A space where nothing seems resolved.

No cheering.

No clarity.

Just waiting.

We often rush past this part of the story, eager to reach the joy of resurrection. But this space matters. It’s where faith is stretched. Where trust is formed without immediate answers.

When The Cheering Stops – For Us

We all experience moments like this.

Times when:

• Support fades

• Recognition disappears

• The journey feels heavier than expected

“When the cheering stops” becomes personal.

And maybe that’s the point.

Because faith that depends on applause won’t last. But faith that endures silence—that’s the kind that transforms us.

The story of Holy Week doesn’t end in silence.

It moves, quietly but powerfully, toward renewal. Toward life. Toward a hope that doesn’t rely on crowds or noise.

Toward Easter Sunday.

Because even when the cheering stops…

the story isn’t over.

  1. Thank you Sean for bringing me right back to the Cross. It’s sad that so many people haven’t experienced what Easter is all about. God’s Blessings to you and family. Beryl
