If Only…
“If only I had made a different decision.”
“If only I had prayed more.”
“If only I had listened sooner.”
Few phrases carry as much regret as “if only.” Those two small words can open the door to guilt, shame, disappointment, and endless replaying of the past. They keep us staring backward while God calls us forward.
The Bible is full of people who could have lived trapped in “if only.”
Peter could have said, “If only I hadn’t denied Jesus.”
David could have whispered, “If only I had resisted temptation.”
Martha may have thought, “If only Jesus had arrived sooner.”
Thomas might have wondered, “If only I had believed sooner.”
Yet God did not leave them in regret. He met them there.
After Peter failed, Jesus restored him.
After David repented, God still used him.
After Lazarus died, Jesus still performed a miracle.
After Thomas doubted, Jesus still welcomed him close.
Regret speaks in condemnation. Christ speaks in redemption.
Sometimes we treat our past mistakes as stronger than God’s grace. We replay conversations, missed opportunities, broken relationships, and failures as though they are the final word over our lives. But the cross already declared the final word: forgiven.
As Romans 8 vs. 1 reminds us:
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
(Romans 8 vs. 1)
That means your life is not defined by “if only.” It is defined by “even now.”
Even now, God can restore.
Even now, God can heal.
Even now, God can rebuild what feels lost.
Even now, grace is still available.
Whilst our enemy wants us chained to what cannot be changed. God invites us into what can still be redeemed.
We cannot rewrite yesterday, but we can surrender today.
So instead of praying:
“Lord, if only things had been different…”
Maybe we begin praying:
“Lord, help me trust You from this moment forward.”
Because God has never needed a perfect past to create a meaningful future.
We should start each day new only looking forward.
While society only looks at past to judge your future.
